Atmosphere is what makes beams, lasers and moving heads visible. Without fog or haze, most of the light show disappears into the air. This guide explains the difference between fog and haze and how pros pick the right machine for events and installs.
Fog Machines
A fog machine heats fluid and pushes out thick bursts of fog. It is the classic choice for mobile DJ shows, Halloween events, stage entrances and clubs. Output is measured in cubic feet per minute. A 400 to 700 watt unit covers most small rooms, while 1000 watt and larger models suit clubs, theaters and big events. Look for DMX control and a timer remote.
Hazers
A hazer creates a thin, even haze which hangs in the air for a long time. It shows off beams without filling the room with visible clouds. Hazers are the pro choice for concerts, churches, theaters and permanent club installs. Oil based hazers give the longest hang time. Water based hazers are easier to clean up.
Low Fog for First Dances
Low lying fog creates the dancing on clouds effect for weddings. These machines chill the fog so it stays on the floor. They are a premium add on for any mobile DJ package.
Check the Venue First
Many hotels and banquet halls have smoke detectors which react to fog. Always ask the venue before the event. Haze is less likely to trigger alarms, but rules vary by venue.
Do Not Forget the Fluid
Use the fluid made for your machine. The wrong fluid clogs heaters and voids warranties. Keep spare fog, haze and bubble fluid with your gear.
