Column PA systems have become a favorite for mobile DJs, bands and presenters. But traditional box speakers still rule many events. Here is how pros choose between them.
What Is a Column PA
A column PA uses a tall, slim array of small drivers on top of a subwoofer. It spreads sound evenly across the room, so guests near the front are not blasted and guests in the back still hear clearly.
Why Mobile DJs Love Columns
Columns set up in minutes with no stands or poles. They look clean in wedding photos and fit upscale events. Many include a built in mixer and Bluetooth, which is ideal for ceremonies and speeches.
When Traditional Speakers Win
For loud dance floors, outdoor events and large rooms, traditional tops and subs deliver more output and longer throw. Pros running clubs or festivals still choose box speakers and line arrays.
Columns for Installs
Columns also work well in installs for churches, lounges, restaurants and conference rooms, where a slim look matters and coverage needs to be even.
