Uplighting is the fastest way for a mobile DJ or event company to change the look of a room. A set of LED uplights turns plain walls, columns and drapes into a designed space, and it is one of the easiest add ons to sell to a wedding couple. This guide covers what pros look for when buying uplights for events and installs.
Battery or Wired Uplights
Battery powered uplights are the first choice for mobile DJ and event work. No power cables means a clean look, faster setup and no trip hazards near guests. Look for at least 10 to 12 hours of run time at full output, wireless DMX built in and a charging case. Wired uplights cost less per fixture and suit permanent installs in banquet halls, lounges and churches where power is already in place.
Color Mixing and Output
RGBWA+UV fixtures give the widest color range, including soft ambers and warm whites brides ask for. Six LEDs of 10 to 15 watts each is a strong starting point for most ballrooms. Higher output units cover tall walls and outdoor events.
Control Options
Wireless DMX lets a mobile DJ run every uplight from one controller or app. Many pro models also offer IR remote control and built in programs for simple events. For installs, wired DMX and a wall controller keep things simple for venue staff.
Outdoor and IP Rated Models
Garden ceremonies and outdoor events need IP65 rated uplights. They handle dew, light rain and dust without extra covers.
How Many Uplights Do You Need
A typical wedding reception uses 12 to 24 uplights. Most mobile DJ companies start with a 6 or 8 pack and grow from there. Pair uplights with pinspots for centerpieces and a mirror ball for the first dance.
